Board certified in plastic surgery, he has devoted his entire career to the specialty of aesthetic plastic surgery and has earned international esteem for his expertise. Dr. Matarasso’s publications, presentations, panels and teaching courses number more than 650. He has served in leadership positions in numerous medical societies, developed oral and written examination questions for the American Board of Plastic Surgery, reviews manuscripts for several medical journals, and is a media spokesperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He has been consistently named one of the top cosmetic surgeons in New York and the U.S. by Castle-Connolly, New York Magazine, Vogue and others.

Dr. Matarasso’s clinical practice is located in Manhattan, where he maintains an AAAASF-accredited operating room and hospital privileges at numerous New York City medical centers. He teaches as a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Education & Training

Dr. Matarasso graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree from Boston University before earning his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1979.

His post-graduate training began at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine – Montefiore Hospital, where he completed an internship and residency in general surgery and became chief resident in general surgery. He continued at Albert Einstein as a resident and chief resident in plastic surgery.

Dr. Matarasso then pursued fellowship training in aesthetic surgery under the direction of Dr. Thomas D. Rees at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital – New York University Medical Center Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. He was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1986.

Publications & Presentations

A prolific author, charismatic presenter and passionate teacher, Dr. Matarasso has published more than 150 scientific articles, letters and abstracts in prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals; delivered over 500 lectures, invited lectures, exhibits, panel presentations and instructional courses at national and international society meetings; authored more than 40 book chapters and monographs on plastic surgery techniques; edited volumes on such topics as non-surgical facial rejuvenation, liposuction and body contouring as well as a textbook on aesthetic surgery after massive weight loss; and contributed to numerous public education materials and websites. His work has been cited in more than a dozen cosmetic surgery and facial rejuvenation textbooks in the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Matarasso is frequently a guest lecturer and course instructor at medical meetings. In addition to the above positions, Dr. Matarasso has edited a three-volume series on liposuction and body contouring techniques as well as two volumes of Clinics in Plastic Surgery on non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

Honors & Awards

Dr. Matarasso has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award (2005) and an award for more than 15 years of service from the American Society of Plastic Surgery. The instructional Aesthetic Video Journals he developed on “Combined Abdominoplasty and Suction-assisted Lipectomy” and “BOTOX® for Facial Rejuvenation” earned Outstanding Recognition Awards, and the latter is now used by the ASAPS for Continuing Medical Education credit. He has also been honored for his work on Botox® and Restylane®.

In addition to the awards he has won in the medical field, Dr. Matarasso has been honored in numerous lay publications as a top cosmetic surgeon in New York and in the United States. He has been named among New York Magazine‘s “Best Doctors in New York” every year in the last decade and has been included Castle-Connolly’s “Guide to the Best Doctors in New York” each year the book has been published. He has appeared in many national and international Who’s Who guides as well as Men of Achievement and America’s Elite 1,000.

Philanthropic Activities

Dr. Matarasso makes time to volunteer for the undeserved and less fortunate and finds this to be one of the most rewarding experiences in his life. In addition to Dr. Matarasso’s voluntary involvement in organized plastic surgery teaching (medical journals, residents, fellows) he is also active in numerous charitable and civic organizations, such as the Board of directors of a nursing and rehabilitation center, historical society and place of worship. Dr. Matarasso also participates in plastic surgery reconstruction outreach and local village and community services.
