Alan Matarasso is a native of Westchester County, in New York. He attended public schools where he was a three sport/varsity letter athlete and all County clarinetist. He is magna cum laude graduate of Boston University and a graduate of the University of Miami-Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Matarasso trained in general surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Hospital where he continued as resident and then chief resident in plastic surgery. He completed a fellowship in cosmetic surgery under the direction of Dr. Thomas D. Rees at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital/Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery-New York University Medical Center. Dr. Matarasso is or has been a professor at two medical schools. He achieved the rank of Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is currently Clinical Professor of Surgery at Northwell Health System/Hofstra University, Zucker School of Medicine. He has hospital privileges at numerous New York City medical centers and maintains an on-site AAAASF-accredited operating room.

Dr. Matarasso has devoted his entire career to the subspecialty of aesthetic plastic surgery. His dedication to medical training, education, and scientific research are manifested in his membership and active participation in more than twenty regional and national medical organizations including the most selective American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is an invited honorary member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons (ASDS), and the Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons (FSPS), and multiple other state and regional societies.

Dr. Matarasso has served on or chaired the annual meeting program or instructional course committees for: American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons (NESPS), the Rhinoplasty Society (TRS) and the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons (NYRSPS). He is or has been involved with the training program of all plastic surgery programs in New York City and is actively involved in the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH)—Lenox Hill Hospital’s (LHH) post-graduate aesthetic surgery fellowship.

He is or was on the editorial boards of: Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal (PRS), Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal- Global Open (PRS-GO), and Clinics in Plastic Surgery. He was formerly a founding editorial board member and senior scientific editor and cosmetic medicine section editor of Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ). He also was on the editorial board of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (APS). He is a manuscript reviewer or discussant for 22 medical journals including the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). Dr. Matarasso has authored over 314 articles and 79 book chapters and monographs, including editor of 7 Clinics in Plastic Surgery. He is the current co-editor of Neligan’s 5 th Edition Plastic Surgery, Volume 2- Aesthetic. He has presented 775 papers, posters, and lectures nationally and internationally.

He served as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) visiting professor from 1999 to 2001, the 2017 Rhinoplasty Society Traveling Professor, and the 2022- 2023 ASPS/PSF Traveling professor. Dr. Matarasso was the recipient of the Jerome R. Klingbeil award for excellence-in- teaching/outstanding instructor. In 2014, he was the honorary University of Toronto’s William R. N. Lindsay Speaker award recipient during their 44th Annual Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Symposium. Recently, Dr. Matarasso was appointed to the Warren B. Davis Circle, the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) Reviewers Hall of Fame. In 2021, he was selected by the residency program as clinical Teacher of the Year. In 2002 & 2003, he was an invited guest examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery for the oral board certification examination and since 2006, at various intervals prepared questions for the written examination. He has been asked to be a consultant a number of times for FDA Advisory boards.

He is a past President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and served on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors, the largest society of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. He has been a member at Large and Parliamentarian and on the Board of Directors for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). He was President of The Rhinoplasty Society (2009-2010) and the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons (2006-2007). He is currently assistant national secretary (USA) to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). Dr.Matarasso is the US delegate to ICOPLAST (International Confederation of Plastic Surgery Societies). He also serves as a director on three non-profit, non-medical Boards. Dr. Matarasso sponsors summer internships for college students from the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University.

He has been selected by Castle-Connolly as one of the “Best Cosmetic Doctors in America” and recognized in their “Guide to Best Doctors in New York” annually since 1996. Dr. Matarasso has also been recognized by Woodward & White’s “Best Doctors in America” annually since 1997; and the New York Times Magazine “Super Doctors” annually since its inception in 2009. He is a recognized member of “Who's Who in the World, Who’s Who America, Who’s Who in the East, Men of Achievement, and Oxford's Who's Who.” Magazines such as W, Vogue (US, Russia, UK), Harper’s Bazaar (2014), Elle, Town & Country, Great Britain’s Tatler, American Health and Departures (2015) have also selected him in their “Best Doctors” lists. In 2020, Goop listed him as “Best For: Body.”

In 2021 Dr. Matarasso was selected in all 5 categories (rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, facelift, breast augmentation, and liposuction) of the inaugural Newsweek Magazine’s “America’s Best Plastic Surgeons” in the U.S. In 2022 he was listed in the Top 10 Plastic Surgeons in all categories: rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, facelift, breast augmentation, and liposuction.
