He has been invited to give presentations on facial rejuvenation at more than a dozen regional and national society meetings, including the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASPRS), American Society of Plastic Surgeons/Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (ASPS/PSEF), International College of Surgeons (ICS) and Multispecialty Foundation for Aesthetic Surgical Excellence.

Facial Rejuvenation | Manhattan | New York CityDr. Matarasso's excellence in facial surgery and nonsurgical procedures has been recognized by numerous lay publications as well. In 1999, he was named New York's top cosmetic surgeon for the face by Town & Country Magazine in its annual listing of the country's best plastic surgeons. He was also named the best facial cosmetic surgeon in the USA by American Health Magazine in 1996 and one of the best facelift surgeons in New York City by Vogue Magazine in 1999.

Dr. Matarasso has moderated a "Masters" program on facial animation for the New York Regional Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and traversed the country lecturing about facial rejuvenation as a traveling professor for the ASAPS. He has written textbook chapters on nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, adjuncts to facial resurfacing, and videoendoscopy to improve minimally invasive surgery techniques. In addition to the major facial surgeries such as short-scar facelift and transconjunctival blepharoplasty, Dr. Matarasso has conducted groundbreaking research in such special areas as liposuction of the neck, buccal fat pad removal (cheek liposuction), scar reduction using Scarguard®, the management of maxillofacial surgery in patients with cardiac dysrhythmias, and the effects of environmental tobacco smoke on patients undergoing facial surgery.

Specializing in both surgical and nonsurgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, Dr. Matarasso advises not only his patients but also surgeons nationwide on how to choose the most appropriate technique. He is supremely well-versed in combining surgical and nonsurgical techniques for cosmetic facial rejuvenation as well as in selecting ancillary (complementary) procedures to surgery. In fact, he has been invited to speak at national society meetings and medical institutions about procedure selection as well as his preferred methods for performing facial rejuvenation, including facelift and brow lift. He is also frequently sought out for his opinion and expertise on the latest advances and concepts in cosmetic facial surgery. He has given talks on the evolution of facial rejuvenation from aggressive approaches to subtle and long-lasting changes.

Dr. Matarasso is proud to provide patients at his Manhattan office with the most advanced facial rejuvenation procedures that have been proven safe, effective and long-lasting. Patients also benefit from his extensive knowledge of alternative techniques and preventing potential complications. Among the cosmetic facial surgeries Dr. Matarasso provides are short-scar facelift, short-scar temporal lift, endoscopic brow lift, transconjunctival blepharoplasty (TCB), primary and secondary rhinoplasty (nose surgery), mid-face lift, cheek liposuction, and neck lift.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Manhattan

Wherever possible, Dr. Matarasso performs a special technique for eyelid surgery called transconjunctival blepharoplasty, or TCB. With TCB, surgical incisions are made inside the lower eyelids, so patients do not have visible scars and do not need any stitches. A laser tightens the lower lids. Unlike traditional blepharoplasty methods, TCB does not injure the muscles under the eyelids.

Blepharoplasty | Eyelid Surgery | Manhattan | New York CityDr. Matarasso's many areas of expertise in blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and upper facial rejuvenation include both upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, transcutaneous approaches, open and endoscopic reduction of glabellar lines between the eyebrows, and managing a complication known as oculocardiac reflex.

One of the ways he has gained such extensive knowledge and honed his skills in blepharoplasty is that he analyzed the indications and treatment of 100 lower eyelid blepharoplasty patients earlier in his career. The results of that study were published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, cited in the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery yearbook, and selected as a media release by the ASPS.

Dr. Matarasso has also given numerous lectures on current techniques in aesthetic blepharoplasty and led teaching courses on upper facial rejuvenation and eyelidplasty for the ASPRS.

Short-scar Temporal Lift Manhattan

In addition to many years of outstanding surgical results, Dr. Matarasso's textbook chapters, journal articles, letters, reviews, lectures, panel presentations, videos and teaching courses on brow lifting have earned him extensive recognition in the medical community. For more than a decade, he has been sought out to speak about brow lift methods, his preferred techniques, and current trends in forehead and upper facial rejuvenation. He conducted a national plastic surgery survey on brow lifting techniques and complications in 1999 for a combined meeting of the ASPRS/PSEF/American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has been instrumental in assessing the benefits and drawbacks of each browlift method and re-assessing those methods as time passes and new techniques are developed.

Brow Lift | Manhattan | New York CityDr. Matarasso specializes in selecting the appropriate brow lift technique for each patient. He has studied the indications, techniques and long-term results of each brow lift method—including traditional/open brow lift (also called rhytidoplasty or forehead-brow rhytidoplasty), closed brow lift, coronal brow lift, endoscopic and endoscopic-assisted brow lift, short-scar temporal lift with tissue glue, and subperiosteal brow and mid-face lift—and discusses the options available to each patient seeking forehead rejuvenation. Using the lateral temporal lift he was instrumental in popularizing, Dr. Matarasso can gently revise the outer eyebrow to create a natural, non-surgical look.

He has also completed substantial research on secondary forehead-brow rhytidoplasty for patients who are not satisfied with the results of their first brow lift. For endoscopically assisted brow lifting, he is an expert in fixation techniques and alternative approaches for Types I-III.

In addition, Dr. Matarasso has developed technical refinements in coronal and endoscopic forehead surgery over the years. His surgical skills are so advanced, in fact, that he has invented his own tools so he can perform brow lifts that live up to his exacting standards. He has created a unique endoscopic brow tray and is developing an endoforehead band.

Cheek Liposuction Manhattan

Dr. Matarasso specializes in an elegant and natural-looking cheek reduction procedure known as buccal fat pad removal, or buccal fat pad excision. He has pioneered the use of liposuction to sculpt the fat pad, a procedure called buccal lipectomy. This removes fat from the inside of the cheeks to transform chubby or "chipmunk" cheeks into a more defined look like what you see when you drink from a straw. Dr. Matarasso has many years of experience with modifying the buccal fat pad to contour and rejuvenate the mid-face. His publications on buccal fat pad treatment have appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his findings at national and regional medical society meetings. He has also extensively studied and lectured about the indications, anatomy and possible complications of the procedure, such as pseudoherniation of the fat pad.

Buccal Fat Pad Excision

Buccal fat pad excision aims to remove excess fat from the cheeks in patients with round, chubby cheeks, or those simply seeking a more defined appearance.  The buccal pads are areas of fat in the lower cheeks that may appear because of a genetic disposition or simply from being overweight, and can cause unwanted “chipmunk cheeks” in certain patients.

During the buccal fat pad excision procedure, an incision is made in the mouth and the fat pad is carefully excised out of its normal location with a forceps or surgical tweezers.  Once a sufficient amount of fat has been removed, depending on each patient’s individual case, the incisions are closed.  This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about one hour.

Mid-Face Lift Manhattan

Dr. Matarasso specializes in and has lectured extensively on a less invasive, short-scar facelift technique that uses a 50% shorter incision. The short-scar facelift, or rhytidectomy, which Dr. Matarasso was instrumental in popularizing, requires no cutting in the hair and therefore no loss of hair or change in hairstyle. Rejuvenating the face from the cheek area down to the jowl and neck, this technique offers a rapid recovery, with patients often returning to routine activities within one to two weeks. Dr. Matarasso performs the short-scar procedure on all facelift patients. It can be combined with chin augmentation to dramatically re-contour the face with very little surgery

Dr. Matarasso has lectured, published and led teaching courses on facelift and short-scar facelift for more than 15 years and is considered one of the medical community's top facelift surgeons. In 1999, he conducted a nationwide survey of facelift patients and complications for a combined meeting of the ASPRS/PSEF/American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has been quoted in multiple books on facelifts and plastic surgery, including, most recently, The Lowdown on Facelifts and Other Wrinkle Remedies (2001). Vogue Magazine honored Dr. Matarasso as one of the best facelift surgeons in New York City in 1999.

In addition to his general expertise in facelift techniques and facial rejuvenation, Dr. Matarasso's particular areas of specialty include:

  • Short-scar facelift
  • Deciding when a facelift is the correct procedure for a patient
  • Use of fibrin sealant (tissue glue) in short-scar facelifting
  • Secondary rhytidectomy (facelift)
  • Facelifting in older patients
  • Vest-over-pants tragalplasty in rhytidectomy
  • Modified suture suspension in facial rejuvenation
  • Superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm formation after face lift

Further, he has invented two pieces of surgical equipment in order to better perform facelifts for his patients: the Matarasso-Stille Super Cut Face-Lift Scissors and Matarasso Facelift Scissors.

Neck Lift Manhattan

Many patients benefit from rejuvenation of the neck and jawline without affecting the cheek and mouth areas. Necklifts with Dr. Matarasso achieve a smooth, natural, refreshed look without a "pulled" appearance.

In addition to writing a textbook chapter on face and neck rejuvenation after massive weight loss, Dr. Matarasso has moderated panels on surgical and non-surgical neck procedures for the New York Regional Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the New York Academy of Medicine. He has also been invited to teach other physicians how to best perform necklifts and avoid complications for the benefit of their patients.

Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping) Manhattan

Dr. Matarasso performs otoplasty—also known as ear reshaping or ear pinning—with a special technique offered by only a few plastic surgeons. With this type of otoplasty technique, Dr. Matarasso makes the incision within the ear instead of behind it. This way, patients' scars are much less noticeable after ear surgery than with the typical approach.

Primary and Secondary Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)
Manhattan

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, will improve the profile of your nose, including the width of the nose and thickness at the tip or end of the nose. Under Dr. Matarasso's expert care, rhinoplasty sculpts and recontours the nose to achieve the shape you have always desired. The result is a natural appearance that won't look scooped-out, pinched-in or turned-up. It will look like the nose you were born with. Generally, the entire operation is done through incisions inside the nose and there is no external scarring. There is no packing placed in the nose after the surgery, which allows for a much quicker and less painful recovery.

Rhinoplasty | Nose Job | Manhattan | New York CityOne of the country's leading experts on rhinoplasty, Dr. Matarasso was a pioneer in the combination of aesthetic rhinoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery to improve nasal contour and correct breathing problems simultaneously. He produced a brochure on correcting nasal deformity for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and he lectured on nose surgery as a traveling professor for ASAPS from 2000-2001. While he is well-versed in all aspects of rhinoplasty, Dr. Matarasso's areas of interest include:

  • Rhinoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery breathing
  • Open vs. closed surgical technique
  • Alar/nostril shaping and correction and prevention of alar retraction
  • The hanging nose
  • Dorsal grafts
  • Secondary rhinoplasty (redo)
  • Preventing post-operative airway problems
  • The relationship of the nose with the chin and neck
  • The nose in older patients
  • Nose surgery combined with other procedures, facelifts, eyes, etc.

His articles on nose surgery have appeared in such publications as The American Journal of Rhinology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery and a medical encyclopedia. He has presented his findings and moderated panels at society meetings in the U.S., Canada, Italy, Brazil and elsewhere across the globe.

Dr. Matarasso is the President of the Rhinoplasty Society. He has been extraordinarily active in the Rhinoplasty Society since he joined in 1999. Previously, he has served as secretary, member of the board of directors, parliamentarian, chairman of the membership and bylaw committees, and other positions. Non Surgical Nose Correction Manhattan

Non Surgical Nasal Correction
Many people who have had Rhinoplasty surgery and even some that have not have irregularities, bumps, curvatures, etc. of the nose. In certain cases these can be improved by injections. These “filler” materials can be used to improve the appearance of the nose. These are rapid, safe injections utilizing naturally occurring products. The results can be extremely and immediately (no surgery, no anesthesia, no recovery time) dramatic.
