His work has been cited in more than a dozen cosmetic surgery and facial rejuvenation textbooks in the U.S. and abroad. He currently serves as the senior scientific editor of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the largest scientific publication in cosmetic surgery.

In addition to his publications, Dr. Matarasso has held leadership positions in numerous medical societies, including the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgery (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) and the Rhinoplasty Society (Vice President, Secretary), and has served on more than 75 committees for organizations such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Medical Society of the State of New York, and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). From 1999-2001 he was a "Traveling Professor" for the ASAPS. His award-winning instructional video on BOTOX® Cosmetic is now used by the ASAPS for Continuing Medical Education credit. In 2008 Dr. Matarasso was honored with the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Excellence in Teaching Course and Outstanding Instructor award.

Dr. Matarasso is a staunch advocate of program safety and patient safety. Much of his research over the past few decades has focused on studying and reducing the potential complications of various surgical and non-surgical treatments, as well as analyzing new products and techniques to determine whether they are safe and not simply unproven fads. He has designed surgical instruments so he can perform safer and more effective procedures for his patients. He has also produced medical teaching videotapes of facial and body contouring surgery.

He is frequently sought out by the media—including magazines, newspapers, television programs and radio stations—and has been quoted in numerous publications, both for the public and for the medical community. Among his many honors as one of the top cosmetic surgeons in New York and in the United States, Dr. Matarasso has been named among New York Magazine's "Best Doctors in New York" every year for more than 10 years.
